Offshore Solutions B.V. are pleased to be sponsoring ‘The Heino-Dakar Foundation’ which consists of five teams completing a gruelling journey of over 7500 km through Dakar - with Gambia as the final destination.
The cars and complete content will be donated to local charities and projects in the Gambia, amongst which the “Tumani Tenda Foundation”. This trip required a great deal of organisation - not only the rolling stock but also supporting goods, materials and fuel.
So why would anyone do this expedition to the Gambia in five, second (and third) hand, cars whilst a ride to the airport and jumping on a plane would be more comfortable and a lot easier? What we would deem “ready for the scrap yard” here in the Netherlands, is actually a commodity in the Gambia. Old vehicles are used for income through sale or traded for desperately needed commodities such as a water pump to assure clean water supplies to a village. In addition, the teams are taking a lot of other goods in the cars, such as school books and materials.
A Dutch woman led the way when it came to supporting communities in the Gambia. Henriëtte Brümmer-Sonko settled down in a small village named Tumani Tenda. It is there that she has achieved real improvement for the villagers. Two schools have been built and the water pump mentioned above was acquired by trading a car which was donated last year! You can read about her other projects in Tumani Tenda and surrounding villages on the website www.tumanitenda.nl
